An emu a day keeps the boredom away.

2005-12-11
12:19 a.m.

Guess I missed an entry today already, huh? And I don't think I put one up yesterday, either, but I had two on Thursday, so that counts. Yes it does.

We arrived at the hotel last night at 11:00 central time, which is mid-yawn-night eastern time. Youngest Son was up at the crack of 6 -- central time. Raring to go, daylight's burning, why are you people sleeping.

By 7 we were driving around looking for a place for breakfast. Cinzel, we ended up at the bailiffs' favorite place for breakfast. No, I did not see anyone I knew. And white gravy draws a big crowd, even on a very cold Saturday morning.

After the greasefest of breakfast, we headed out to the new house. I was amazed I got us there, because I wasn't driving last weekend and wasn't sure I could find it again.

We walked around peering in the windows when I suddenly realized Youngest Son is IN the house. He'd found an open door and headed on inside. So of course we all herded in there and checked out the place properly. Hubby immediately fell in love with it and had much the same reaction I did last weekend...if it only had one more room it would be totally perfect.

It was so cold in the new house, though, I finally rounded the kids back up and started putting everyone in the van, shivering while it heated up. Then I noticed the sheriff's deputy circling the area, slowing down to take a good long look at us. I kept my head down and ignored him, of course, but finally saw him park in the neighbor's driveway to watch us for real.

I sent every ESP vibe in my head to Hubby to hurry up! I began to wonder, oh, my God, is he christening the bathroom or something?

No, he finally opens the garage door, testing out the new garage door opener, and I get very tense, waiting for the rap on my window. Fortunately Hubby assessed the situation and decided the time to leave is now. The deputy didn't follow us into town, but I guarantee our tag number was taken down for later reference.

By 9:30 a.m. we already couldn't stand the overtired 4-year-old and were back in our hotel room where EVERYONE was required to take a nap. That was heaven.

My mom and brother met us at 12:30, and we all headed out to the real estate agent's office and then on to the house again to meet the builder as well. Cinzel, you'll be amazed to know just how many little extras Hubby kept asking about. And even I'm amazed at how little Hubby really expects the little extras to cost.

The builder measured my brother's wheelchair and planned how to handle a bedroom and a bathroom doorway to accommodate him. I was impressed with his ingenuity on the bathroom situation, as there really isn't enough available space to just widen the existing doorway. When it appeared impossible to fix, he came up with another idea.

I'm not sure I'll love the final bathroom door widening project, but you do what you got to do, you know? I know for certain my brother will visit us in the future, and I also know he may one day need to live with us. I'd rather make the necessary adjustments now so he's always comfortable. Besides, he's the second family member in my family that has ended up in a wheelchair. We never expected either of them to be in wheelchairs. Who knows what the future holds for anyone else on either side of our families?

We did put down some earnest money and put together a first offer with our agent today, but we'll need to tweak that a little on Monday before he makes it final. Plus, we still don't know how much the extras will cost. We should get a final proposal on them sometime Monday, and they'll be negotiated separately from the original house price.

Tonight the kids and Mom and I went over to Cinzel's mom's house, and Mom really seemed to enjoy herself, what half hour or so we stayed. Youngest Son took one look at her Christmas tree and the piles of presents under it and wanted to know if he could open just one present.

In fact, Mom really seemed to enjoy the whole day today. Oldest Son wanted to spend the night in her room tonight, and she was so tickled that he wanted to.

I had a nice chance to visit with my brother after Hubby and Youngest Son headed to our room upstairs and Mom and Oldest Son went to her room next door. Don't know what I'd do without my family, and today has been a great day, being all together. Can't wait to not have to be "on the road" while I'm working. Could be much sooner than we even thought.

Oh, just for general chuckles here: The house we are looking at is in the country. At one end of the road there is a goat farm. Some mules and cows live there as well. There are neighbors nearby, but they're not too close. There is, however, a trailer house directly across the road that has a pet...emu. Yes indeed, an ostrichy-looking bird, an emu. Holy cow. My brother commented...Hmmm. A goat farm down the road, mules, cows, an emu right across the road. You don't need no stinkin' cable TV, you got all the entertainment you could want right here. :)

Everyone go wish Lizzzygizzzy congratulations on her new J.O.B. job! She lost one of her jobs when Hurricane Katrina destroyed the casino she dealt at, and she finally has another one, after much searching!

Over and out.

Your new house sounds perfect - full of it's own entertainment? What more could a girl want? :) I'm glad you've found what you're looking for, with a few adjustments. That's awesome!
