Our yard's gone to the dogs.

I worked in the yard off and on all day today. Much to our dismay, the dogs aren't getting any better at finding the chew bones they've buried out there. In fact, now that I've finally figured out (I'm a very slow learner) that that's why they're digging the hell out of the yard, I stop them at the back door and insist all chew bones stay inside.

We have a huge backyard, and apparently there's so many places to hide the bones, they either a.) don't remember where they put them, or b.) have to move them frequently, so as to keep the other one from finding their stash. My money's on the latter. When they get another year or so older we plan to start planting some trees out there, and we've got several decent sized holes to choose from already.

In early summer, Hubby cut two holes in the fence, side by side, near where we put the pool up on the side of the house. The girls (dogs) loved this, and they watched the kids swim and play for hours on end. Since those holes were so obviously appreciated, he cut two holes in one side of the fence, where there's an empty lot between us and the next neighbor, as well as two holes on the front of the fence that faces the driveway. That one they especially love, as they can see the kids ride bikes and play basketball, skate, etc., and if they're outside when the bus comes, they can see the kids get on or off the bus, too. Not to mention bark like crazy at the garbage men once a week.

I've been tempted to nail picture frames around each of those fence holes, so that when they stick their head out, you get a live boxer dog picture.

Today I witnessed the funniest use of the peepholes ever, though. Daisy stuck her head through a hole and deposited into the front yard a very nasty, obviously buried-quite-a-while and freshly dug-up chew bone just as Trixie popped her head through the second hole and watched it hit the ground. Where now neither one of them can get it.

They resemble humans in lots of ways, don't they?

What with having my own two bonehead dogs I've done a lot of reading on dog behavior, and I have to ask, are y'all walking them? Because two boxers, especially young ones, have A LOT of energy. Hiding and digging is a typical way of them burning off some energy and boredom. If you're not walking them regularly, you probably ought to seriously consider giving them a long walk (like a good 45 minutes or more) each day, preferably in the morning. I know, I know, you didn't ask for ass-vice and all, but I'm just saying!

Loved the idea of framing the holes so it looks like boxer pictures! That would make such a great picture.... Good luck with the bone hiding....

That really is so funny - I love that your husband wants to keep the dogs happy and not bored!

How about some pictures of those precious pups? You haven't posted pics in a long time and I'm sure you still take them.
