Not in Kansas anymore.

We finally made it to church here in Smalltown. Well, actually we went to one in A Little Bigger Smalltown about 15 miles away. The priest today was so enjoyable to listen to. Pity he's only visiting. A lady who came up and introduced herself to us told us he was a breath of fresh air for them today, so the usual one must be kind of dull.

Even though we are Catholic, we had adopted an Episcopalian church as ours in Charleston, so we picked an Episcopalian one to attend here, too. Now I wasn't raised Catholic, so this is just my ten years or so of observations of the Catholics, but the Episcopalians don't seem near as uptight as the Catholics.

And one other huge plus: The Episcopalian churches we've attended all have a nursery. All of the Catholic ones we've attended and/or belonged to only had cry rooms. It's amazing how much more I enjoy church without fussing at my four-year-old to hush.

After church we went to eat lunch, and then Hubby brought us home so he could make his weekend trip to Lowe's in peace.

The goats are out again, only this time I actually saw them. I counted six, but don't know if there were more further in the woods or not. Since we saw a car parked on the corner, we figured they were letting the owner know their goats were out. (Hope so, anyway, because we don't know who owns the goats on that end of the road.) So yeah, goats do seem to be a particularly hot livestock crop here in Smalltown. Not sure what the appeal is.

Also, the horse down the road is back out in the mornings now, waiting to be fed. Phhhew...

Smalltown's fourth graders have begun teaching Oldest Son a thing or two about farm life. He came home Friday afternoon asking if it's true that to kill a chicken you cut its head off. I know. I really wasn't prepared to deal with that kind of knowledge yet.

Then on our way home that night, we were driving behind a huge pickup truck with a four-wheeler in the back. Strapped to the top of that four-wheeler was a dead deer. Fortunately, the kids didn't notice it, as I wasn't ready to talk about deer hunting yet. I mean I really don't feel strongly about deer hunting one way or another, but I don't want to do it, thanks. I do, however, wish someone would teach the deer to stay out of the road!!!!

This has been your weekly "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto" report. Over and out.

We too have tons of deer, and, we're almost in Kansas! :) They're marked with the same deer crossing signs skibigsky talked about. It's quite common to see a deer strapped to the top of a vehicle or in the back of a truck, etc. You'll adjust. But, you will have to discuss with your children as to WHY bambi and his Mama have been killed... good luck with that.

We have tons of deer around here, and in some attempt to slow the, uh, usual results of truck/deer interactions, the state has put up deer crossings - they are literally these gravel walkways that lead to the road (and I guess fencing that leads to said walkways). The results, while better than nothing, aren't great. The husband and I keep thinking pneumatic tubes would be much more effective... *ahem.
